Hullo everyone! I hope that you all have enjoyed this semester as much as we have! Tonight's show will be a repeat on Surrealism from a previous show as one of our co-hosts Nancy aka FANCY will not be able to join us. If you haven't heard it before, we talk about Dali, his moustache and the Surrealist movement in general. Fun stuff, fun stuff. Anyway, thanks for listening in every Wednesday from 9:30-10 pm and we hope you continue to seek out art knowledge wherever you go! Ciaaaao, art loverz.

Gardens as Art Form?

Can the act of creating a garden be considered art? Some would argue that gardens should not be classified as art. I mean, you are creating something and you are expressing, albeit through plants and flowers, how you feel about the world around you to some extent. There may be more physical work involved with planting a garden, but it is still an effective way to illustrate a point about something; about what however, I'm not exactly sure.

Some famous gardens include...drum roll please...the Versaille Gardens, duh! They were designed by André Le Nôtre for the French king Louis XIV and as you can tell from the photo above, this garden was all about precision and man controlling nature. Yep, dudes were insane about having perfect plants. Others include the Garden of Cosmic Speculation and the Boboli Gardens in Italy. Want to hear more about gardens as an art form and get in touch with your inner green thumb? Listen in tonight from 9:30-10 pm on 91.7 KVRX or online at kvrx.org!

Oh my, oh my...it's about time we discussed design on our show! Tonight we had two guests on the show to talk about the Senior Design Exhibition that opens on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at the Creative Research Lab over on E. MLK Blvd. The opening reception is from 6-9 pm and there will be tons of fun that night, including buttons featuring the graduating seniors faces!! Buttons!? YES! BUTTONS!

That said, we chatted with them about their senior design projects, the exclusive design program at UT and their favorite fonts. It seemed like they were in favor of Helvetica and didn't think anything to badly about it...I mean, it IS everywhere for goodness sakes. There is also a documentary about this typeface, called Helvetica (what else?). Anyway, yes, if you are doing nothing on May 9, you can at least go learn about design at the Senior Design Show! Hope to see you there!

Austin Architecture

Hey hey everyone! Thanks to all of you guys who came out to Untitled! It was a huge success and hopefully next year will be even better! If you didn't get to make it out, then for shame. I guess we will forgive you, but you will never get to experience the greatness that is Untitled until next Spring.

Anyway, enough about that...on to what our show topic is tonight! We will be talking about local architecture here in Austin and how awesome the buildings are that make up this lovely little town of ours. Did you know that the iron of the capitol building was brought in from Belgium!? Or that the grounds of the Capitol were haunted way before they started building it!? Exciting stuff huh? Well, you'll get to hear about this and more on air tonight from 9:30-10 pm on 91.7 FM!!!

On today's show we discussed pop art, which was a major movement that took place during the 1950s and 1960s. Some of the major players during the pop art movement were: Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns and Wayne Thiebaud (pronounced 'TEE-BO' in case you were wondering...). Hmm, it seems as if in order to be a part of this movement you had to have a weird name...

Anyway, so yeah, pop art = removing the material from its context and isolating objects or combining them with others for contemplation. Also, they were all about pop culture as they found their inspiration from advertising, comic books and any mundane thing around them. It was a reaction against Abstract Expressionism and a continuation of the Dada movement as well. That's all for now...remember to save your Campbell's Soup cans! Andy would be proud...
